Liveability (2023)

Through the exhibition Liveability, Amsterdam-based Cuban artist Yaima Carrazana continues the artistic direction developed in her recent projects, conveying many of her concerns through painting and, more specifically, through colour. Once again, she appropriates the colour codes and meticulous designs used in the Dutch government’s visual identity, employing them in her work as a mechanism of liberation.

The exhibition consists of harmonious colour combinations derived from the Atlas of the Living Environment, an online platform that provides up-to-date information about the quality of the Dutch living environment through data and colour-coded charts. The exhibition culminates in a series of monochrome paintings in a vibrant yellow—a colour Carrazana has used in her most recent work and which originates from the visual identity of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

The yellow monochromes are no longer merely fields of colour. Upon closer examination, they appear to be studies of Kazimir Malevich’s painting Yellow Plane in Dissolution, in which the yellow form can be understood as a plane of colour moving through space. Its shorter right edge fades, appearing to dissolve gradually into the background. This work belongs to the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Throughout the exhibition, Carrazana appropriates the radical quality of these colours and translates them into oil paintings, perhaps searching for the human dimension behind systems of classification and marginalisation.
