information: In Dating a Royal which was created specially for the Elba Benitez Gallery and KVADRAT Carrazana has painted a series of monochrome oil paintings that replicate exactly the colors of a popular brand of nail polish, from which the paintings take their titles. From Malevich to Ad Reinhardt, monochrome painting has held a special place in the history of abstraction. It represents one of most defiant challenges to the canon of figurative painting, while at the same time it tends to accrue its own heavy load of symbolic and interpretive meaning, not infrequently laced with heavy-handed mysticism. By creating sumptuous, even virtuosic monochrome works that refer specifically to something as far removed from high art as women’s nail polish, Carrazana simultaneously partakes and upends this male-dominated occasionally ponderous tradition.
